DrupalCONCEPT ELITE: Architecture

The IT architecture of DrupalCONCEPT ELITE consists of a host of distributed services, each running on multiple servers. By this redundancy we reach a multiple of a single server’s capacity. Additionally, the complete system is able to sustain its function in case of failure of a single component.

Scaleable frontend

The DrupalCONCEPT ELITE Cluster provides in its base configuration two dedicated Drupal frontend servers. A load balancer evenly distributes the web requests between these frontends.

Through this load balancing DrupalCONCEPT ELITE meets the three decisive demands on professional Drupal hosting:

• Performance: Even with only two frontends the cluster is able to deal with several thousand requests per minute.
• Scaleability: The number of frontends can be increased if a growing load demands it.
• Availability: In case of a failing component the remaining frontends keep responding.

We have completely optimised the DrupalCONCEPT ELITE hosting infrastructure for Drupal. Additionally, we have equipped all Drupal frontends with extensions that help Drupal achieve maximum efficiency:

• APC: An opcode cache which accelerates the execution of PHP code.
• Varnish: A proxy cache which delivers web content considerably faster than the web server.
• Memcache: A distributed key-value store which reduces database queries.

High performance backend

In order to relieve the Drupal frontends and to provide for the scaleability of the overall system at any given time, all important backend services have been separated onto specialised server clusters:

• MySQL cluster
• File storage cluster
• Solr cluster

Test environment

The server infrastructure is complemented by a staging server, designed for testing websites before launching them on the production cluster.
